The Preston Castle is located in Ione, California. It was built in 1890 and was created to reflect the architectural style which is commonly referred to as "Romanesque Revival". This castle was originally referred to as "The Preston School of Industry". During the time in which it was built the community saw the need for a place where juvenile, offenders to the law could be placed, with the purpose and intent of rehabilitation. Construction was completed in the year 1894. About this time the first offenders walked through the doors and spent their time in this large structure. The Preston Castle was the most well known reform school. When it opened, electricity was not even present because of this high structure. A year later, however, the luxury came through a means of a water wheel which produced minimal but enough lighting for the residents of the facility. Around 1960, the staff decided it was time to move on from the castle because of it's tremendous deterioration.
Through the years, there have been several types of hauntings. For instance, there is a special cemetery used for people who passed away during their time in Preston. The cemetery only holds about twenty three single graves, however, there is known to be spirits lingering around this area. There have been people who sense strong emotions and coldness while on these grounds. There are also other strange events that have occurred in the castle such as strange noises, unusual smells, voices, intense emotional states, and even full body apparitions have been spotted in this haunted American castle. It is also believed that many of the spirits lingering in the castle are highly intelligent which makes this one of the scariest places on Earth- especially at night! Below are pictures of the Preston Castle then and now:
